Spaceship Earth Reopens After Refurbishment

After a two-month closure for refurbishment, Spaceship Earth—the iconic geodesic sphere and centerpiece of EPCOT—officially reopened on October 25, 2025, with a soft opening occurring a week earlier. While Disney did not implement sweeping changes to the attraction’s storyline or structure, the refurbishment brought a series of subtle but meaningful updates that enhance the overall guest experience.

Refurbishment Overview

The refurbishment began on August 25, 2025, and lasted approximately two months. Disney described the work as routine maintenance and infrastructure improvements, focusing on behind-the-scenes systems rather than guest-facing changes. This included:

  • Ride system updates for smoother operation.
  • Improved fire detection systems.
  • Enhanced lighting, particularly the restoration of the “Points of Light” LED package on the exterior.
  • Cosmetic touch-ups to the entrance and queue areas, including fresh paint and cleaner surfaces[4].

Ride Experience and Scene Updates

The core experience of Spaceship Earth remains intact. The attraction still takes guests on a 16-minute journey through the history of human communication, from prehistoric cave paintings to the digital age. Narration by Dame Judi Dench remains unchanged, and no new scenes were added during this refurbishment.

However, guests and Disney bloggers have noted several quality-of-life improvements:

  • Audio-Animatronics throughout the ride now move more fluidly, with some figures showing a greater range of motion.
  • Scene lighting has been refreshed, making details more vivid and enhancing the storytelling ambiance.
  • The ride feels smoother overall, likely due to mechanical tune-ups and recalibrations.

Despite speculation, Disney did not implement the previously announced “Story Light” overhaul, which was originally planned before the COVID-19 pandemic. That ambitious reimagining was shelved, and there are currently no confirmed plans to revisit it.

Exterior and Operational Enhancements

Outside the attraction, the entrance marquee lighting has been restored for the first time in years, adding a nostalgic glow to the sphere’s base. The GEO-82 Lounge, located inside the structure, remained open during the refurbishment, offering guests a quiet space to relax and take photos even while the ride was closed.

With the reopening, Spaceship Earth is now operating full-day schedules, and wait times have been relatively short, especially during the soft opening period. This refresh comes just in time for EPCOT’s busy holiday season, including the Food & Wine Festival and the upcoming Festival of the Holidays.
