Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain

Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain is one of Disney’s most thrilling and immersive roller coasters, located in Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. This attraction takes guests on a high-speed adventure through the Himalayas, where they encounter the legendary Yeti, the mythical guardian of the Forbidden Mountain.

Origins and Development

Expedition Everest was publicly announced on April 22, 2003, during the fifth anniversary of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Construction began a month earlier and took nearly three years to complete, requiring 38 miles of rebar, 5,000 tons of structural steel, and 10,000 tons of concrete. The ride officially opened for previews on January 26, 2006, and had its grand opening on April 7, 2006, led by Disney CEO Bob Iger.

The attraction was designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and manufactured by Vekoma, a renowned roller coaster company. It was built at a cost of $100 million, making it one of the most expensive roller coasters ever constructed. The mountain itself stands at 199.5 feet, making it the tallest attraction at Walt Disney World.

Ride Experience

Guests board a rickety steam train operated by the fictional Himalayan Escapes – Tours and Expeditions, which promises a scenic journey to the base of Mount Everest. However, the train soon veers off course, heading into the Forbidden Mountain, where the Yeti lurks.

The ride features both forward and backward motion, a unique element that adds to the suspense. At one point, the train reaches a broken track, forcing it to plunge backward into the darkness. Riders experience speeds of up to 50 mph (80 km/h) and a 80-foot drop, making it one of Disney’s most intense roller coasters.

Boarding the Train

The adventure begins as guests board a rickety steam train operated by the fictional Himalayan Escapes – Tours and Expeditions. The station is filled with detailed artifacts, maps, and warnings about the mysterious Yeti. As the train pulls out, riders get a scenic view of Disney’s Animal Kingdom before heading toward the Forbidden Mountain.

The Ascent

The train climbs a steep incline, passing through prayer flags, carved stone shrines, and abandoned expedition camps. The atmosphere builds tension as riders approach the snow-capped peak, with breathtaking views of the park below.

The Broken Track

Suddenly, the train comes to a screeching halt—the track ahead is twisted and broken! The Yeti has sabotaged the path, forcing the train to plunge backward into the darkness. This reverse section is disorienting, as riders feel like they’re free-falling through the mountain’s tunnels.

The Yeti Encounter

After a brief pause, the train switches direction and rockets forward into the depths of the mountain. Riders catch a glimpse of the massive Yeti, illuminated by strobe lights as it swipes at the train. The encounter is brief but intense, adding to the thrill.

The Final Drop

The train bursts out of the mountain, racing down an 80-foot drop at speeds of up to 50 mph (80 km/h). The sudden acceleration and sharp turns make for an exhilarating finale before the train returns to the station.

The Yeti: Disney’s Largest Audio-Animatronic

One of the most ambitious elements of Expedition Everest is the Yeti, a massive audio-animatronic designed to terrify riders. Standing at 25 feet tall, the Yeti was originally programmed to swipe at passing trains. However, due to structural issues, the animatronic was placed in “B-mode”, meaning it remains stationary while strobe lights simulate movement.

Legacy and Impact

Expedition Everest remains one of Disney’s most popular and critically acclaimed attractions. It is praised for its detailed theming, thrilling ride mechanics, and immersive storytelling. The ride’s mountain structure is the tallest artificial peak in any Disney park.
