Disney’s Country Bear Jamboree

The Country Bear Jamboree is one of Disney’s most charming and quirky attractions—a musical revue starring a cast of animatronic bears who croon, strum, and stomp their way through a rollicking country-western show. First opening in 1971 at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, it was one of the last attractions personally overseen by Walt Disney himself before his death in 1966.

Origins and Concept

The idea for the Jamboree was born from Walt’s vision for a ski resort in California’s Mineral King Valley. He wanted a family-friendly show to entertain guests after a day on the slopes. Imagineer Marc Davis, known for his work on Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion, was tasked with creating a bear-themed musical act. Davis, along with Al Bertino, sketched out various bear bands—marching bands, mariachi groups, Dixieland ensembles—before settling on a country music theme.

Though the ski resort never materialized, the concept was repurposed for Walt Disney World. Using Disney’s cutting-edge Audio-Animatronic technology, the bears came to life in a rustic theater setting, complete with mounted animal heads that chime in with commentary.

 The Show

The original show featured 24 animatronic characters at Magic Kingdom, each with a distinct personality and musical style. Hosted by Henry the Bear, the cast includes fan favorites like:

  • Big Al, a slow-singing, deep-voiced bear with a cult following
  • Trixie, a lovesick diva with a penchant for dramatic ballads
  • The Sun Bonnets, a trio of sweet-voiced sisters
  • Liver Lips McGrowl, a rockabilly bear with Elvis vibes

The show runs about 16 minutes, with toe-tapping tunes like “Bear Band Serenade” and “Blood on the Saddle.” It’s a blend of humor, nostalgia, and musical parody that appeals to all ages.

Global Footprint and Legacy

The Jamboree was so popular it expanded to Disneyland in 1972 and Tokyo Disneyland in 1983. While the Disneyland version closed in 2001, Tokyo’s remains operational and beloved. Over the years, Disney introduced seasonal overlays like the Country Bear Christmas Special and Vacation Hoedown, adding variety and keeping the show fresh.

In 2024, Disney announced a revamped version called the Country Bear Musical Jamboree, set to debut at Magic Kingdom. This update promises new songs and refreshed performances while preserving the heart of the original.

Cultural Impact

The attraction even inspired a 2002 live-action film, The Country Bears, which—while not a box office hit—cemented the bears’ place in Disney lore. The Jamboree is often cited as a nostalgic favorite, especially among fans of classic Disney storytelling and animatronics.
