Inspired by the success of the Matterhorn Bobsleds in Disneyland, Walt envisioned a high-speed, space-themed coaster that would anchor a reimagined Tomorrowland. However, due to technological limitations in the 1960s, the idea was shelved until the opening of Walt Disney World in Florida provided the space and resources to bring it to life.

The attraction was developed by WED Enterprises (now Walt Disney Imagineering) and manufactured by Arrow Development, featuring a dual-tracked steel coaster system enclosed within a massive white dome that has become a visual icon of the park.

Space Mountain is a dark ride roller coaster, meaning the entire experience takes place in near-total darkness, with only stars, comets, and galaxies illuminating the way. Riders board sleek rocket-shaped trains and ascend through a tunnel of pulsating lights before plunging into a twisting, turning journey through simulated space.

Interestingly, Shanghai Disneyland is the only Disney park without a Space Mountain, opting instead for the cutting-edge TRON Lightcycle / Run.
